Consultation meeting on Bhojpuri, Awadhi, Tharu, and Magar language Bill as official language

Consultation on Official Language bill

Under the leadership of the Indigenous Peoples Forum Nepal, we have successfully helped secure, through the Lumbini Provincial Government and Provincial Assembly, an Act recognizing the Bhojpuri, Awadhi, Tharu and Magar languages as official languages for Lumbini province.

We are now ready to coordinate and support the Provincial Assembly and Government in drafting an Act/Bill on the official languages of government business at Lumbini Province. As an initial step, we have begun consultations with representatives of the Bhojpuri-, Awadhi-, Tharu-, and Magar– language speaking communities.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in today’s consultation meeting, held under the chairmanship of the organization’s President, Resham Gurung, and contributed valuable ideas. Our thanks go to Dr. Gopal Thakur, former Chairperson of the Language Commission and former Constituent Assembly member, representing the Bhojpuri-speaking community; Constituent Assembly member and former President of the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities, Nagendra Kumar Kumal; former President Jagat Baram; former Secretary of the Language Commission, Dr. Lok Bahadur Lopchan; Bikram Mani Tripathi, representing the Awadhi-speaking community; Raksha Bahadur Raika Magar, President of the Nepal Magar Association; Vice President Kabiraj Magar; Kuchhad Chaudhary of the Tharu Welfare Assembly; Mohan Tandukar, representative of the Language Commission; Dr iShree kumar Maharjan, Program Director of the IPAS Fund; Hilari Bandhu Bhujel, a member of IPAS Fund Nepal; the organization’s Treasurer, Ras Bahadur Gurung; and everyone else who took part.
